Kanaya won the 2018 Asia-Pacific Amateur at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore by two strokes over Rayhan Thomas and fellow countryman Keita Nakajima. Tied for 15th and six strokes off the lead through 36 holes, Kanaya shot a third-round 64 to move inside the top three and then closed with 65 to win over Thomas who closed 65-66 and Nakajima who closed 67-67. After his victory, he won the 2019 Taiheiyo Masters on the Japan Golf Tour, made the cut in the 2019 Masters Tournament at Augusta National and received the 2020 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the top-ranked male amateur in the world.
