Matsuyama won the 2011 Asia-Pacific Amateur at Singapore Island Country Club in Singapore by one stroke over Korea’s Soomin Lee to become the Championship’s first two-time winner and the first to successfully defend his title after winning in 2010 at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Japan by five strokes. Entering the weekend five strokes off the lead, the 2011 Masters Low Amateur reduced his deficit to just one with a third-round 65 and his bogey-free final-round 67 was enough to hold off Lee and his closing 64. 10 years after this victory, Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters to become Japan’s first male major champion. Other highlights of his professional career include multiple victories on the PGA Tour and Japan Golf Tour, multiple International Presidents Cup teams and a bronze medal in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
